Why have a Biblical Presbyterian Network? PDF Print E-mail

We've been asked, "Why are you trying to start another renewal group?".   Our answer is:  "We're NOT!!".   The renewal groups work at the national level, providing information to the average Presbyterian in the pew.   Shining a light in the darkness.

What we're trying to do is create a grassroots movement that will empower those who still believe in the quote from the Westminister Confession:   "God alone is Lord of the conscience, and hath left it free from the doctrines and commandments of men which are in anything contrary to his Word, or beside it, in matters of faith or worship."

This past General Assembly disappointed many by passing the following actions:

  • This Assembly voted to remove the “fidelity and chastity” standard for ordained officers (G-6.0106b), an action that requires the approval of the presbyteries in order to be implemented. This action gives us the opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to fidelity in marriage between a man and a woman and chastity in singleness as a standard of behavior for deacons, elders, and ministers of the Word and sacrament.  While it is unfortunate that we must face this challenge again, face it we will in joyful obedience.  When Assembly actions come before your presbytery, we urge you in the strongest possible terms to see to it your congregation is fully represented and your voice is clearly heard.

  • Proposals for non-geographic synod or presbytery structures that would allow congregations to maintain more rigorous standards for membership and leadership while remaining united in ministry within the PC(USA) failed, along with the request to form an additional non-geographic Korean presbytery.  Clearly there is continuing misunderstanding of the term “inclusive” among Presbyterians.  These conversations are far from over, however, and we are already initiating next steps.

Signs of Hope from the GA PDF Print E-mail

There were signs of hope coming out of the GA:

  • Corrected misguided language in the statement of the 218th General Assembly (2008) on the relationship between Christians and Muslims,

  • Affirmed the continuing project to retranslate the Heidelberg Catechism in a healthy and exciting partnership with the Christian Reformed Church and the Reformed Church in America,

  • Dramatically improved 27 key sections of the proposed new Form of Government which will now be considered by the presbyteries,

  • Took a reasoned stand in speaking to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, and sent the full witness (majority and minority reports) of the Special Committee on Civil Unions and Christian Marriage to congregations and presbyteries for study.*
*quoted from: A Pastoral Letter from Presbyterians for Renewal (Letter)

The full Pastoral Letter from Presbyterians for Renewal is a great hand-out to give to your Session and Congregation.

This is not to say we agree with all of these items, just that there were signs of the work of the Spirit in the groups that worked to make changes in these areas.

Uncharted Territory! PDF Print E-mail

For the past year, massive shifts in American culture have been taking place. For instance, our financial system will never be the same. The cultural shift has also occurred within the PCUSA. We have had a number of evangelical churches "shift" completely out of the denomination. The votes on maintaining our ordination standards have gotten closer and closer. And it feels as if there is a sense of helplessness within the evangelical community within the PCUSA. We've watched the implosion of the Episcopal church (ECUSA) and now the Lutheran church (ELCA). The old strategies do not seem to be holding us together and the vision for a renewed Presbyterian Church USA seems more faded then ever.

What makes the BPN different from any other renewal group? PDF Print E-mail

Are you considering the Biblical Presbyterian Network? The question arises: What makes this different from every other evangelical group which has emerged out of the PCUSA? Those of us who are initiating the BPN asked the very same question. We did not want to reinvent the wheel or attempt something that has already been tried.

Frankly, most of us are too busy to attempt something that we did not think would work or would be effective for the cause of Christ within the PCUSA.

Newsflash

On May 9th, the moderators of the BPN issued a Call for Prayer and Fasting.   This call is asking all churches in the PCUSA to pray and fast so that the General Assembly will seek biblical faithfulness in its deliberations on the many issues facing the denomination, such as the definition of marriage, the place of the
nation of Israel in the world and ethical standards for ordained church officers.

As we begin the process of forming the Biblical Presbyterian Network, we ask that you join us by registering here on our website.     Then look over the member list to find others in your area to connect to.    Connecting to them is as easy as reviewing their profile, clicking on the Connections button, then selecting the Request Connection selection. In this way, you can form your own regional network of Biblical Presbyterians.
